Rhodesian Ridgeback vs Quad Bike - Ridgebacks Racing

post.body Rhodesian Ridgeback vs Quad Bike - Ridgebacks Racing Video Clips. Duration : 4.05 Mins.

NB The dogs are slowed down to 1/4 speed to give your eyes time to really see how their bodies actually move. Kim & Gypsy get a real workout, running along the beach in joyous pursuit of my quad bike. My husband, sitting on the rear luggage rack, managed to film them at it. Music: Led Boots by Jeff Beck. "A Mohawk hairdo or Spina Bifida? Ridged or Ridgeless?" Despite ruthless culling (killing) of all ridgeless pups, as enshrined in the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed standard, 1 in 20 Rhodesian Ridgeback pups is born without a ridge. Anyone wondering about, or objecting to, the lack of a ridge on what must still be called 'Slickback' Rhodesian Ridgebacks will have to accept the ungainly nomenclature until breeders come to their senses and either admit the ridge for what it is — a medical deformity, iea mild form of Spina Bifida which puts the young pups at a 10% risk of a potentially lethal, difficult to diagnose and medically expensive complication called Dermoid Sinus (an opening leading from the spinal cord to a hole in the skin on the ridge, forming a potential entry passage for bacteria etc. into the spinal cord or brain) — and either breed this dangerous, purely cosmetic deformity out altogether leaving all 'Ridgebacks' free from Spina Bifida and safe from Dermoid Sinus and its dangerous and expensive complications, or at least allow those who wish their beautiful, graceful 'African Lion Hounds' to be free of the deformity to breed from 'Rhodesian Slickbacks' and make the ...

Dogs: Different Breeds

post.body

Although there are approximately 400 breeds of dogs recognized in the world, the American Kennel Club (AKC) only recognizes 146 breeds. These breeds are subdivided into seven groups: Sporting, Hound, Working, Herding, Non-Sporting, Terrier and Toy. The dogs in each group share similar characteristics but can be quite diverse and therefore each group has distinctive subgroups.

The Sporting Group were bred to assist man in hunting, especially in retrieving birds from water or fields. These are very active dogs that are loyal and intelligent. They need lots of exercise and do not like to be left alone. Excellent family dogs who love interaction, these dogs can play fetch for hours and absolutely love it. Subgroups in this category include retrievers, pointers, setters and spaniels.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

The Hound Group are also favoured for hunting because of their instinct to follow fast-moving game like rabbits and foxes. They are renowned for their keen sense of smell and sharp eyesight and tend to be great pets due to their gentle, easy to get along with nature. Subgroups include sight hounds such as greyhounds, whippets and Irish wolfhounds; scent hounds like basset hounds, beagles and dachshunds; and large game hounds such as the beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback.

Dogs: Different Breeds

Dogs that make up the Working Group were historically bred to perform specific tasks for people. This group includes sled dogs that love cold weather, living outside and need plenty of exercise. Guard dogs such as mastiffs, rottweilers and Great Danes were bred for protection and are thus alert, courageous, intelligent and independent. These dogs can be territorial and require strong leadership and structured training.

Other breeds that make up the Working Group include personal protection dogs like boxers and Dobermans that are very loyal and strong-willed and rescue dogs such as the friendly Saint Bernard. Rescue dogs can be terrific with children if they are raised with them and tend to be quiet and unassuming.

The dogs of the Herding Group do just that, herd livestock. This group can be broken down into sheep herders like shepherds and collies and cattle herders such as bouviers and corgis. They love to work, exercise and play. Extremely agile and easy to train, these dogs also tend to be fabulous family pets.

The Terrier Group consists of breeds that are determined and very competitive. Two types of terriers are fighting breeds and vermin hunters. Fighters such as pit bulls and bull terriers are courageous yet perhaps somewhat cocky but fortunately most of their aggression has been bred down. They can make excellent pets but need early socialization to ensure that they can be comfortable around other people and animals.

Vermin hunters were originally bred to hunt vermin on farms and hence are very alert, lively, agile and independent. These dogs include just about every breed of terrier that you can think of and make great pets if you like spirited dogs that require patience, training and attention.

The majority of the dogs that comprise the Non-Sporting Group were bred to perform specific jobs that now have become obsolete so the animals have become companions. The personalities of the dogs that make up this breed group have very wide variations so it makes sense to consult breed-specific information sources before selecting one of these dogs as a pet. Some of the breeds in this group include the Dalmatian, Bichon Frise, Lhasa apso and the poodle.

The final breed group is the Toy Group. They are mainly miniature versions of hunting or working dogs and tend to be adorable, affectionate pets that are ideal for the elderly or apartment dwellers. These dogs need attention and exercise and will benefit tremendously from training to prevent them from constant barking and nipping.

Many people prefer mixed breeds but the advantage of choosing a purebred is predictability of behaviour. For example, if you want a dog that will retrieve, you know you will get that with a retriever. The main point is that all dogs should make excellent pets if given proper attention including exercise, discipline and affection.

Best Watch Dog Breeds

post.body

Most people have a beloved pet in their home, which in most cases is a dog. While we are seeking companionship without canine, we also want them to protect our households from any potential harm. By this we want them to be able to sense danger, and alert us in plenty of time to be able to take action. While all dogs will bark if someone knocks at the door or if they hear strange unfamiliar sounds, there are breeds that have a keener sense of danger and are more alert to this. For instance, the Shih Tzu breed, even though they are adorable, they would rather us protects them than the other way around. This is an example in saying that toy breed dogs do not make the best guard dogs.

A popular breed for a watch dog is a Doberman pincher, which was originally a mix of Rottweiler, greyhound, and terrier, is a very protective dog and extremely loyal to its family. The temperament of the Doberman pincher will vary from one dog to the next, but will not hesitate to attack if it senses danger. Another highly sought after breed is the infamous Rottweiler. This dog encompasses incredible strength and will protect a family with its life if necessary. They have an amazing resistance to pain and fear when they are in a protecting mode. For this reason they should be trained from the time they are puppies, for they are some of the most intelligent and loyal breeds around.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

The schnauzer breed is a highly sought after dog, with the giant version being an excellent watch dog. The schnauzer has a tendency to become very attached to its owner/family, and will trail behind them everywhere in the house. This paired with their loud astute bark make them a good guard dog. The Rhodesian ridgeback and the German shepherd are often used with police staff to aid in the capturing of fugitives. The German shepherd has been used for search and rescue missions. The Rhodesian ridgeback only barks at certain times, so when it does, the owner should pay close attention. Training should be done early on to ensure optimal compatibility and behavior.

Best Watch Dog Breeds

These are just a few of the many examples of watch or guard dogs out there. Generally a good rule of thumb is to direct your search towards the hunting, sporting, and herding breeds. These dogs have usually spent more time outdoors, and will have a keener sense of awareness of the dangerous and elements that are "out of place." Watch dog breeds are generally excellent with children, and will protect them at all costs. Just be sure to ask the breeder plenty of questions, and do your own research of the particular breed you are interested in. This will ensure that the breed will match the needs of the individual. With a little planning beforehand, a person can find the perfect watchdog that will make an excellent companion for many years.

Bull Terrier, Rhodesian Ridgeback, And Rottweiler Training Tricks

post.body

A few particular types of dogs are really a little bit more difficult than others in terms of dog obedience training. A number of of the more difficult breeds at the top of this list, include Bull Terriers, Rhodesian Ridgeback, and Rottweilers. However with the proper training strategies, you'll have your pup properly trained in virtually no time.

Training Rhodesian Ridgebacks

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

Rhodesian Ridgeback Training isn't in fact as tough as training a lion, however these particular dogs were selectively bred at first to track lions and handle them until eventually hunters could shoot the lion at closer. Simply because they can be a strong and self-governing type of dog, they call for a tough, steady dog owner. Rhodesian Ridgebacks probably are not for the first time pet owner but with the right owner, coupled with adequate socialization and puppy obedience training, they can be a trustworthy pet.

Bull Terrier, Rhodesian Ridgeback, And Rottweiler Training Tricks

Training Bull Terriers

Proper Bull Terrier Training is really important since this specific type of dog requires a large amount of order in its daily life. The bull terrier is a high-energy dog that can make a very good member of the family with the the right socializing, as well as puppy training. Having said that, they can be a little too rambunctious for homes which have small youngsters so this must be thought about for families considering the Bull Terrier.

Even though Bull Terriers were one time recognized as strong fighters, they are a drastically milder kind of dog today. Bull Terriers can work as a deterrent to robbers and other crooks based solely on their history, and they'll frequently guard their owner if required. They can be taught to be defense canines but they are better matched as companion dogs.

Bull terriers tend to be courageous yet good natured dogs. They are often extremely trustworthy and become incredibly connected to their masters. Consequently, Bull Terrier Training should be strong and unfailing while tempered with affection and powerful leadership from you. Bull Terriers are very active and generally do far better in households where they are going to be given a substantial amount of attention, supervision and companionship. When you need to leave the Bull Terrier by itself for prolonged amounts of time daily, contemplate getting a friend or relative to check in on them as well as take them for a walk when you're away. If left alone for lengthy intervals often, they can have stress and anxiety along with behaviour issues.

Training Rottweilers

Rottweiler Training isn't as hard as countless people today assume that it is. A much-maligned breed, Rotts are definitely not the beast which is sometimes pictured in films. Rottweilers are a tender, loyal, and extremely intelligent kind of dog, and they will certainly be a highly valued member of your family. Rottweilers were originally farm dogs, bred in order to herd cows, guard property, and have additionally been used as law enforcement k9s and even messenger and ambulance dogs during the First World War. Very intelligent, a Rott is not difficult to teach if you are able to remain strong, loving and consistent.

How to Train a Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy - The Right Mindset When Training Your Rhodesian Ridgeback

post.body

Originally bred to be hunters and watch dogs, the Rhodesian Ridgeback possesses a gentle, protective nature within the family setting. These powerful and intelligent dogs require a great deal of daily exercise and make excellent running companions. Rhodesian Ridgebacks do well with children, but because of their playful nature may do better with older children than with younger ones.

Firm, strong leadership is required from the Rhodesian Ridgeback's owner. Masters who want their dog to be more human than pet will not do well with the Ridgeback, as he needs to know his place in the family Only owners who have the time and energy to devote to large amounts of daily exercise will be successful in curbing the Ridgeback's stubborn tendency.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

The number one thing that a successful trainer needs to do is earn the assurance and trust of the animal to be taught. These two attributes are the cornerstone to a good dog-training course. A dog is social by temperament, and you should use this predisposition to make schooling him easier.

How to Train a Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy - The Right Mindset When Training Your Rhodesian Ridgeback

In a dog's world, if you are the guide, then he will logically understand what you instruct him to do. If you try to omit this step, it will be close to hopeless to train your dog. As you interact with your dog by becoming the alpha in your pack, he will naturally give you the respect and trust that you warrant. After the dog has learned to have confidence in and respect you, he or she may be astonished at how fast the teaching sessions improve.

Most new dog owners misconstrue love and affection for loyalty and respect. By indiscriminately showering a new puppy with snuggles and love, you may be making your training work more demanding down the road. While a puppy can play the cute card to get more or less everything that it wants, it is a gigantic blunder to get started this way. You do not do your dog any favors when you indulge him as a puppy and then require him to respect you when you are set to begin teaching him.

Dogs in reality welcome these types of boundaries, because they are comparable to the rules that the pack leader establishes in nature. Though the pack leader is at the head of the group, each dog in the pack also holds an structured place above and below his pack mates.

Good luck training your new Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy!

The 7 AKC Dog Groups Explained

post.body

Do you want a new dog? Have you really thought about it? Why are you thinking about adding a new dog companion to your family in the first place? Do you have any idea what you're looking for in a new dog companion? What are you real needs in a dog? And your wants? There are many things to consider first before bringing home that new bundle of joy.

It is very important, first, to match your new dogs overall personality, exercise requirements and needs to you and your family as closely as possible. With luck you're choosing an animal that is likely to be with you for 10 years or longer so put forth a little research time in the beginning and you'll be rewarded for your efforts for years to come.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

Were you aware that the common dog comes in more than 400 different breed types world wide? There is much more variation among our friend the family dog than in any other species of mammal known today. The selection of available dog types to choose from is truly amazing. They come in more sizes, shapes, colors, coat types, abilities and personalities than you could shake a bone at.

The 7 AKC Dog Groups Explained

Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to find the right dog breed to fit your personality as well as your current lifestyle. Dogs, just like people, have many different jobs and most were bred for very specific activities. This is probably one of the most important things you need to know before you get the wrong dog for you. Example: If you are a couch potato you don't want to bring home a dog breed with extreme energy - and a need to express that - or if you are a triathlete, you don't want to bring home a new exercise partner with tremendously low exercise requirements.

Here I will list each of the major AKC dog groups, briefly describe their overall purpose and what the dogs were originally bred to do, list many of the jobs dogs in each particular group currently perform, as well listing as a few members of each group.

- The Herding Group

Bred for stamina, these super intelligent herding dog breeds work with their owners all day long out in the fields moving livestock. Overall, these energetic, intelligent herding dog breeds make excellent pets and work extremely well with different kinds of training such as agility, flyball, Schutzhund, search and rescue and obedience. Keep in mind, since these dogs were bred to do a particular job (herding), they do better when they have lots of exercise.

A few members of the AKC herding group are the German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, Border Collie and Bouvier des Flandres.

- The Working Group

The dogs of the working group were bred to help man in many various jobs - from pulling sleds, guarding a home or tracking, to pulling carts, water rescues, and more. These particular dog breeds have been bred for several generations for very definite purposes and they need jobs to fill their days. They have very active minds, and are very trainable and willing to work - it is also true that these working dog breeds also require a lot of training.

Overall, the larger size, power and strength of many of the members of this group may make them unsuitable for most families, however they thrive with the right companions. Remember, since most were bred to work, they do best with lots of exercise and a specific task to do.

A few members of the AKC working group are the Boxer, Alaskan Malamute, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, and Rottweiler.

- The Hound Group

The members of the AKC hound group were bred to help man while hunting. Divided into 2 separate groups, the hounds track their prey using their wonderful senses of sight (called sight hounds) or smell (called scent hounds). The hound dog group has some of the oldest dog breeds known to man today.

Many of these dogs are quite vocal based on their hunting background so it would be a good idea to hear their vocalizations before you decide to get a hound of your own. Also, it is also a good idea to keep these dogs on a leash at all times since they can easily be led by their nose, or eyes, into situations that may get them into trouble.

A few members of the AKC hound group are the Basset Hound, Beagle, Bloodhound, Greyhound and Rhodesian Ridgeback.

- The Terrier Group

The feisty and energetic terrier group dog breed members were bred to hunt vermin both above and below ground and are often described as the "pest controllers" of the dog world. Typically these tenacious little dogs have little to no tolerance for any small fast moving animals, the postman, other dogs, etc. They are well known for their tenacious, feisty and independent nature.

Terriers can make great pets in the right home but need a determined owner who matches their dogs' spirited personality.

A few members of the AKC terrier group are the Airedale Terrier, Bull Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Scottish Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier.

- The Toy Group

The toy group dog breeds were developed simply to be our companions. Their main job is to make their owners happy. The only things the members of this dog group have in common really is their petite size. The toy dogs are also called "lap dogs" sometimes because this is where many of these toy breeds prefer to stay, in their masters lap.

It is very true that the name "toy" is very misleading. Many of the toy dogs are as tough as nails. Toy dogs are especially popular with people that live in apartments or people without a lot of living space.

A few members of the AKC toy group are the Pomeranian, Chihuahua, Pug, Yorkshire Terrier and the Havanese.

- Non-sporting Group

The different purebred dog breeds in the non-sporting group are a wide collection of dogs in all different types of shapes, sizes, coat types, jobs types, personalities and overall appearances. Many people call this the AKC "catch-all" dog group. The diverse membership of the non-sporting group contains a little bit of everything - big dogs, little dogs, hairy dogs, bald dog breeds and some of the finest companion dogs you might possibly ever own.

A few members of the AKC non-sporting group are the Bulldog, Lhasa Apso, Dalmatian, Boston Terrier, French Bulldog, and Keeshond.

- The Sporting Group

Well known for their incredible instincts in both the water and woods, many of the members of this AKC sporting dog group continue to actively participate in hunting and other field trials today, actively retrieving and hunting feathered or furred game for their masters. The sporting dog breeds are well known also for their easy going temperaments.

Included in this group you'll find the pointers, retrievers, setters and spaniels. Keep in mind that the sporting dogs do need regular exercise, frequently.

A few members of the AKC sporting group are the Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Irish Setter, Pointer and the Cocker Spaniel.

- Miscellaneous Dog Group

The many different dog breeds included in the AKC Miscellaneous Group are awaiting final breed recognition by the AKC. All dog breeds that are in this group can compete and earn titles in AKC Obedience, Tracking and Agility events.

Many of these dog breeds are ones that you may not see everyday but can make great pets in the right homes. Research each of these breeds one by one since they have different working backgrounds such as hunting, herding or guarding.

As of the writing of this article, the current members of the AKC Miscellaneous Group are the Pyrenean Shepherd, Beauceron, Redbone Coonhound, Dogue de Bordeaux, Norwegian Buhund and the Swedish Vallhund.

If you're like most people you probably have many unanswered questions about dogs in general. Hopefully armed with the information above you will have a better idea of what various dog breeds were originally bred to do and will better understand whether or not they will fit your needs. Finding the right dog breed for you is truly a very important process. The best way to do that is when armed with the knowledge to make a decision based totally on fact, not fiction or hear say.

Discover the Rhodesian Ridgeback Dog Breed

post.body

I hope that the following article will help you if you are looking for a Rhodesian Ridgeback Dog

As hunters, Ridgebacks were sent out in a pair, often in larger groups, to wear a lion down by taunting and goading it into confusion. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed of dog from Southern Africa, originated in Rhodesia (modern day Zimbabwe). The first European settlers decided to cross the breed with they're own dogs in order to impart certain attributes needed in a lion-hunting dog. Once complete, the Rhodesian Ridgeback got standardized and registered 1922 in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).

Appearance

Discover the Rhodesian Ridgeback Dog Breed

The Rhodesian Ridgebacks distinguishing feature is the ridge of hair along its back running in the opposite direction to the rest of its coat. The ridge must be regarded as the escutcheon of the breed. The Rhodesian Ridgeback represents a well balanced, strong, muscular, agile and active dog, symmetrical in outline and capable of great endurance with a fair amount of speed. The mature Rhodesian Ridgeback is handsome and upstanding.

Color

Light wheaten to red wheaten. Excessive black hairs throughout the coat are highly undesirable. A little white on the chest and toes is permissible, but excessive white hairs here, on belly or above toes is undesirable.

Character/Temperament

Males can be combative with other males. The Rhodesian Ridgebacks do well with other dogs, cats ore other animals, if they're well trained and socialized at an early stage. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are loyal, intelligent, gentle, and very independent. They do not make a good first dog, though the same traits that make them difficult often appeal to the more experienced owners. The Ridgebacks are also very good watch dogs, but not suggested for guard dogs. Despite their athletic, sometimes imposing exterior, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has also a sensitive side.

Exercise/Training

Intelligent to a fault, the Rhodesian Ridgeback accepts correction as long as it is fair and justified, and as long as it comes from someone he knows and trusts. The Ridgeback loves to run, and it needs daily mental and physical exercise to keep it from becoming frustrated.

Grooming

It needs only of occasional brushing to remove dead hair. The coat of the Rhodesian Ridgeback needs only a minimal care.

How Can I Control My Dog's Aggression Towards Other Dogs?

post.body

First and most important, what causes a dog to be aggressive towards other dogs?

Most dogs have a natural territorial instinct, some more than others, and it's important that you spend some time researching the characteristics of the breed you are considering buying before making a commitment.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

In addition, fear is a type of aggression. This is termed 'fear motivated aggression'. Certain breeds of dogs tend to be more aggressive than others, no matter how they were raised, Other types of aggression are dominance, territorial, possessive, protective, and redirected aggression.

How Can I Control My Dog's Aggression Towards Other Dogs?

A study by the University of Pennsylvania as well as 6,000 dog owners concluded that the number one aggressive breed out of the 33 breeds surveyed was the Dachshund, that's right the wiener dog. The study found that one in five dachshunds have bitten or tried to bite strangers, and a similar number have attacked other dogs; one in 12 has snapped at their owners.

A nervous or highly-strung dog often feels intimidated and will react aggressively. German shepherds are often very nervous and will attack small breeds if they annoy them by barking or nipping at them.

Other breeds with suspect dispositions are:

Llasa Apso: can be cranky with kids    Toy poodles: bite out of self defense    Rhodesian Ridgebacks: very dominant breed    Miniature Pinschers: "big dog" mindset in little body    Pekinese: intolerant    Chihuahuas: prefer adults, not tolerant of kids    Chow Chow: one-person dogs, bite without warning    Giant Schnauzers: very dominant breed, will even challenge adults    Old English Sheep Dog: very protective of owner    Cocker Spaniel: very protective of owner    Rottweilers: very protective Therefore, what can we do to prevent aggression directed towards other dogs. Obedience training is the first and most obvious step. When trained correctly from the beginning, the dog will respond to its owner's commands.

Once your dog recognizes your authority and accepts that you are the boss, he will be more manageable. Socialization is the next step. You should gradually introduce your dog to other dogs so he becomes used to being around them and less prone to react aggressively.

Dog training to eliminate aggressive behavior should always be carried out with patience and understanding. Never rush your dog and most important, NEVER punish him. Instead, employ positive reinforcement and praise and reward him when he behaves correctly. All dogs love to please their owners and respond to praise and treats. Without exception, I have always found the simple philosophy of praise and reward to be the most effective means to train your dog.

Always, always remain calm. All too often I see owners who become embarrassed by their dog's aggressive behavior on the leash, or they are frightened that their dog is going to hurt another dog and often over react or under react. If you become tense, your dog will feel it instantly is more likely to increase the aggressive behavior.

Be especially aware of your body language, and do whatever it takes to maintain your cool. Focus on working with the dog, not on what others are thinking about your dog.

Be constantly aware of your surroundings. It is usually far better to notice a dog approaching from a distance and start working with your dog, than it is to wait for that dog to be upon you and then try to CALM your dog.

Having said that, never reinforce the behavior. Often I see nervous owners stop and pat their dogs saying something like "it's okay" in a sing-song voice. All this does is teach your dog that you approve of the behavior. After all, he's just behaving reactively, and you're patting him for it!

Try giving the dog something to do. Don't  just fall back on a sit-stay, but work the dog in some kind of a sequence. Keep him busy with something else; keep his brain engaged.

Prevent problems by reading the warning signals ahead of time. For extra control, I always recommend using a halti-collar that fits over the dog's face and fastens above the neck. The leash attaches to a ring below the dog's throat. What does it accomplish? It allows a dog who might otherwise pull on the lead to self-correct without any jerking, yanking, or pinching. It is made of nylon, is quite durable, and comes in one of six sizes and needs to be fitted to the dog.

Invented by a Dr. Roger Mugford it works on the principal that no animal likes to walk with its head turned to the right or left. As a dog begins to forge ahead, reaching the full extent of a short or long leash, the halti-collar will gently turn the dog's head. The dog learns very quickly not to drag ahead. If he does not remember, a slight wrist pressure will remind the dog to stop or slow down.

These are just few tips for handling a leashed dog that is aggressive towards other dogs. If you find you are still unable to resolve the issue yourself, it would probably be best to contact a trainer experienced in dealing with the problem.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback

post.body

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a breed that no one seems to know how to classify. In some countries this breed is considered a member of the Working Group. In other countries he has been placed in the Hound category. In still others he is a classified as a Gun Dog. Historically, the breed performed all of these duties in its native land. The original country of origin of this dog is Africa. The Ridgeback in Africa was used by the natives to harass the lions on a hunt, being quick and agile and making feints at the lion, distracting him while the natives came in for the kill.

The name "Ridgeback" is because of the very distinct line which is created down the center of the back where the hairs lie in opposite direction from the "lay" of the coat, creating a ridge which is obvious and unique to the breed. Only one other breed, the Thai Ridgeback, carries this "trademark". The ridge should have two swirls of hair at the top of the ridge, creating the appearance of a crown.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

The Ridgeback does not enjoy great popularity as a pet. It is strongly independent. This dog happily fulfils the roles of both a guard dog and a hunting dog, but it will do exactly what it wants to do if the owner is not the "leader of the pack". They are not overly affectionate and do not make friends with strangers. They should not show aggression, but will not fawn over people nor be overly affectionate except to their own household.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback

The color of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is always a deep red or fawn. White markings, if any, should be small, on the toes or the chest. Males should be 25-27 inches and females 24-25 inches. The "ridge" is of course the identifying characteristic of the breed and must be present and quite obvious. The Ridgeback should move with a long stride and should have good angulation in the rear, he should be agile and able to make quick turns, being of good length of leg for the feinting and quick strikes necessary when on the hunt. The dog's overall appearance should be that of a well muscled and athletic dog.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback will thrive on country living and makes a protective and fearless guardian of the property. It should never show aggression towards people and this is not part of its nature. This is a dog that should show protective instincts of its territory and should ward off marauding animals. It is fine to have in an urban household if given plenty of exercise. In either case, the Rhodesian Ridgeback needs to have good obedience training as a puppy. they are an energetic and inquisitive breed and can get into a lot of trouble if not kept in a safe fenced in area.

Rhodesian Ridgeback - How To Prevent Your Dog From Biting

post.body

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are known not only for the distinct fan-like ridge along their backs. This breed originally known as the African Lion Hound also makes excellent companions and guard dogs. Part of Rhodesian Ridgeback training is correcting unwanted behavior such as biting. Biting may be a typical guard dog's natural instinct, but with guidance you can prevent yourself from having big problems (and destroyed furniture) in the long run.

Anyone with a dog in their home will understand how canines like to nip, chew and bite -- ridgebacks are no exception. While the ridgeback is not necessarily a dangerous dog, they can be a bit aloof towards strangers and can also be a bit stubborn without the proper dog training.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

When should I teach my dog? Training a Rhodesian Ridgeback when they are young is most ideal. Ridgeback pups are still eager to learn and enjoy socializing with others. Younger dogs have a greater tendency to "bite" when they're teething. It goes away when they age, but you would also still have to be patient when your older dog starts to bite or show improper behavior. What can you do to prevent them from biting?

Rhodesian Ridgeback - How To Prevent Your Dog From Biting

1. Use toys. You may find yourself picking up destroyed objects from your house with their chewing. To keep this from happening, make sure you give them enough chew toys to play with. This keeps them happy and entertained, thus lessens the need to be destructive.

2. Socialize them. Rhodesian Ridgebacks also have a strong pack instinct, so regular play with family members and other pets is recommended. Socializing your ridgeback goes beyond getting them familiarized with traffic or noises. Letting them play with other dogs allows them to understand that it is not acceptable to bite at will.

3. Do not punish. Excessive punishment, kicking or slapping a Rhodesian Ridgeback will not do you any good. There is rarely any difficulty with training this breed since they are very intelligent and loyal to their master. Ignoring them if they did something wrong would already be a good indicator of punishment. Unlike other sporting dogs, the Ridgeback may not put up with aggression by the owner --- it responds more to positive reinforcement and rewards.

4. Show them who's boss. Although the Ridgeback may be a great family dog, part of their temperament would be it having less of a servitude nature compared to other dogs. Rhodesian Ridgebacks have a greater tendency of treating you as their equal rather than their master if you're not conscious.

5. Be consistent. Once you start dog training, you must make sure that everyone in the house provides consistent commands. All the members of the family should have the exact same orders as well as hand signals so as not to confuse them.

6. Be preventive. Do not wait for the threat of your ridgeback to bite before you begin dog training them. A lot of dog owners nowadays just go through the motions, and wait for someone to get bitten before they start researching and preparing. Do not let this happen to you. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are loyal, loving and great family dogs, it's all just a matter of putting their protective instincts into good use and stop them from biting!

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

post.body

A Ridgeback puppy can be an absolute pleasure to bring into your home, however if you are looking at adding one of these puppies to your family then it is a good idea to learn a bit about them before making that decision.

This dog is a large breed and as such will need to be trained from an early age so that they will be manageable and also social when they are a full grown dog. You really don't want a dog of this size to be anti-social and unmanageable.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs have quite a good temperament and can be great with children, the only draw back is that because they are so large they will easily knock over a child when they get a bit excited. Although they wouldn't intentionally hurt a child, they can do so if they accidentally knock them over which is one reason why children should always be watched when around dogs.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

Here are a few facts about Rhodesian Ridgebacks that you will want to know if you are considering bringing one into your home.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Adult Size

These are a tall breed with a male adult reaching a height of between 25 to 27 inches and a weight of around 80 to 90 pounds. The femail dog can reach a height of between 23 to 25 inches and a weight of around 65 to 75 pounds.

Although this is a placid breed of dog, due to their size and muscular body they can be quite frightening to a person who doesn't know the dog. Although placid in nature they are a good guard dog and will be protective of their human family.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Temperament

This breed has a lovely temperament and are a loyal, loving dog. They are extremely intelligent which is a big plus when it comes to training. Their greatest joy in life is to spend time with their family. Although they love a walk, they are also quite happy to lie and sleep all day.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Health Considerations

One of the biggest health problems found in this breed is a condition knownn as Dermoid Sinus. This condition unfortunately can only be fixed in very rare cases, in most cases there is not cure and it can be quite painful for the dog. If buying a Ridgeback puppy you should have him/her checked for this condition before purchase.

Another problem in large breeds is Hip Dysplasia and once again this should be checked before purchasing a puppy and it is also recommended to ask about the parents of the puppy whether they had any hip problems.

Bloat is one other condition that can affect large, deep chested dog. When your dog has been exercising or eating, let them wait five to ten minutes before drinking which can go a long way in preventing bloat. If your dog shows any symptoms of bloat you should take him to the vet immediately.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Exercise Requirements

A daily walk will be enjoyed and your Ridgeback will love to get out and about and be quite active running around. When he comes home he will usually switch back to lazy mode and be quite happy to sleep.

They aren't a hugely active breed and wont pester you constantly to go on walks, they are quite happy to laze around. It is important for their health and fitness though to take them on daily walks.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Grooming

This breed is quite easy to keep clean being a short hair dog. A weekly brush will keep their coat shiny and healthy. They are big so they can be a handful when trying to bath so it's a good idea to get them use to a bath from when they are young.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Life Span

As with most large breeds a Ridgeback will generally live for around 10 to 12 years. A good healthy diet and good living conditions will help your dog to live a healthy and long life.

Conclusion

This breed really is a great addition to any home as long as you remember that the little cute puppy you are considering buying will grow up to be a very large dog. But given some good training and lots of love and attention, they will be a pleasure to have in your home.

History

Records show that ridgebacked dogs were used in South Africa as hunting and companion dogs as far back as the 15th Century. They were used to track big game (hence the name "Lion Dog") and were trained to trap the prey without attacking, and to alert their masters by barking.

In the 17th Century, these dogs were bred by European settlers with their own scent hounds and mastiffs, into the Ridgeback of today.

Appearance

Ridgebacks are large, handsome and althletic looking dogs. Their name comes from the ridge of hair on their back which grows in the opposite direction to the rest of their hair.

They have a broad skull with big round eyes which are quite wide set. They can have a black nose with dark eyes or a brown nose with amber eyes.

They have a deep set chest with strong, muscular shoulders and loins.

Temperament

Ridgebacks are stubborn and determined dogs; it is essential that they are properly socialised and receive some proper training at an early age. Because of their stubbornness, they can be a challenge to train and may not be suitable for inexperienced dog owners.

Having said this, they are a pleasure to own. They make lovely family pets; they are confident and placid at home although they are generally aloof with strangers.

With their imposing size and a big bark, these dogs make good guard dogs and are likely to deter intruders.

Grooming

With their very short, dense coat, a minimal amount of grooming is required.

Exercise

Ridgebacks are big dogs and therefore require a significant amount of exercise - in the region of an hour a day as a minimum although they will keep going for as long as you ask them to!

Health Problems

As with many large dogs, hip and elbow dysplasia is not uncommon. Parents "hip" scores should be checked to minimise the risk of this hereditory disease being present - good breeders will only breed from parents with low hip scores.

It is estimated that about 5% of Ridgebacks have Dermoid Sinus; this relates to a tube like piece going from the surface of the skin into variable depths of the tissue. This has a tendency to become affected. Breeders should ensure that puppies are tested for this condition before they go to their new homes; if a puppy is free of Dermoid Sinus, it is not something that will develop at a later age.

It is possible for vets to operate to remove the Dermoid Sinus.

They are actually great with children and other pets, as long as they have been reared alongside them. A highly intelligent and strong willed breed, some have been known to open gates and even cabinets to get a snack. These, however, frustrate some owners. Rhodesian Ridgeback Training - How to Train Your Ridgeback Puppy

post.body

This wonderful breed was bred originally to hunt lions and their size and appearance will often give the impression that they might be an aggressive dog, in actual fact they are a very placid, gentle breed. Although gentle, they are still very loyal and protective of their human family.

Because they are such a large breed and are quite powerful it is important to have proper training with your Ridgeback so that they become well socialized and also so you can take them for a walk without them ripping your arm out of the socket. They will need daily exercise and it is best to be able to take them out for a walk without worrying about being able to control them.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppies

Although this breed are generally not aggressive, they are very big and because of their size they can sometimes, unintentionally, cause injury by accidentally knocking someone over. This is particularly so with small children so it is important to supervise children while around large dogs. Ridgebacks just don't realize how big they actually are and when they get excited they can easily jump up and knock someone over.

Rhodesian Ridgeback Training - How to Train Your Ridgeback Puppy

All dogs are naturally pack animals and every pack has a leader. A Ridgeback will at some point try to assume the leadership role and it is very important to let your puppy know from a young age that his place is NOT at the top of the pack. Your dog needs to learn that you are the leader of the pack and all human family members are above him in the pack heirachy. Once he learns this then he will happily accept his position.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are very intelligent and as a result are reasonably easy to train. Here are a few tips on how to teach your dog his position in the pack:

* When eating dinner, always eat before you feed the dog. Let your dog wait until the family have finished eating before he gets fed.

* When you feed your dog let him sit or stand and wait for his food. Put his bowl of food down in front of him but don't let him go to it yet. Tell him to stay and then wait for a few seconds before giving him a command to eat. It will only take a few times of doing this for him to know what is expected of him.

* Always make the dog enter or exit the house last. When you are going through a door, don't let him rush past you, make him wait until all humans have gone through the door and then let him through.

* Always use an authoritative voice when disciplining your dog and stand over him to give him the impression that you are bigger and stronger and this will let him know that you are his superior.

It is important for a large dog breed to know his place in the pack, after all you don't want a large, strong dog being the boss of the house. He needs to know that you are his superior and he must obey your commands.

Dog Training Classes

Attending dog training classes is important with any dog as it helps socialize them and also helps them learn basic commands like sit, stand, stay, heel. After attending dog training classes you should be able to walk your dog without him pulling you along or without him trying to chase every other dog he sees.

Dogs love to please their masters and love to receive praise, so use lots of praise when training and your dog will love to continue doing well to please you.

If you train your Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy well and teach him they basic commands from an early age and let him know that you are his master, then you will have a very manageable and pleasant dog. Then your dog will give you the respect and trust that you demand of him. Remember that cute little puppy will grow up to be a very large dog, so look past those puppy dog eyes and give him the discipline that will turn him into a lovely, obedient dog.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a loyal, intelligent and loving dog and if you train them well thwy will be a pleasure to have in your home.
